      <image:caption>Lead Teacher Shira (she/her) is a rabbi and Jewish educator based in Washington Heights. She received rabbinic ordination from Hadar in 2024 and holds a BA/MA in Talmud and Rabbinics from JTS and a BA from Columbia University. She spent this past year working in Jewish day school and Hillel settings and is currently a chaplaincy intern at NYP. Shira is passionate about expanding access to Jewish tradition, in all of its complexity and beauty, for Jews of all backgrounds. In her free time, you’ll find her cooking, reading sci-fi and fantasy, and playing with her dog. She is excited to be joining the Fig Tree team this year.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Lead Teacher Daniel (he/him), is a theater artist, artistic director, songleader, and Jewish educator, originally from Israel and New Jersey. Daniel has over 10 years of experience in Jewish education as well as a BFA in Drama from NYU Tisch with a focus in directing. Education has always informed his theater work. He is currently the Director of Performing Arts at the Perlman Camp where he also serves as song leader, as well as co-artistic director. As the co-founder of the Live-In-Room Collective, a Brooklyn-based new play laboratory, he works with fellow writers to turn their ideas into fully realized plays and produces public readings of their work. Daniel was also a founding teaching staff member of SAM Elementary where he spent years building the program.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Lead Teacher Sarah (she/her) is a Library Assistant at Columbia University. She earned her BA from New College of Florida, where she wrote her honors thesis on Jewish mothers’ ever-changing relationship with Lilith mythology, drawing on medieval childbirth protection amulets and second-wave feminist literature. She has spent years working as a private B’nai Mitzvah tutor and Teacher’s Assistant at Temple Shir Shalom Religious School in Oviedo, Florida, and also returned to her BBYO region to volunteer as a Chapter Advisor. Sarah is passionate about instilling in others a lifelong love of learning, and is so excited to help expand Fig Tree to Ridgewood! She plans on applying to library school within the next year to pursue her career as a children’s librarian.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Assistant Teacher Mads (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist, storyteller, music educator, and environmental advocate based in Brooklyn NY. They received their BA from Wesleyan University, where they spent four years in The Mazel Tones, a Jewish acapella group with the mission of spreading joy and community through Jewish music and bringing Jewish diasporic languages like Yiddish and Ladino to life in the form of song. Now, Mads is a songwriter, songleader, and piano teacher in Brooklyn and is passionate about teaching music to people of all ages. Mads has a background in working with elementary and middle school-aged students, and enjoys teaching afterschool cooking classes and music lessons. When they aren’t teaching at Fig Tree, you can find Mads hosting community shabbat dinners, performing with their musical improv troupe, or birdwatching in Prospect Park.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Lead Teacher Nikkita (she/her), originally from the UK, is a singer-songwriter and interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. She also holds a Diploma in Fine Arts, Textiles and Illustration from the Leeds College of Art, a BA (hons) in Politics and an MA in International Relations. Her academic focus explored the extent and significance of cultural exchange and longevity. She has volunteered many years as a youth leader in a theater and stage school summer program at Bradford Playhouse in the UK. Nikkita is dedicated to bringing her rich experiences as a Jew of color, and passion for the lesser known Jewish communities around the world through culinary history in particular. Each year she focuses on one aspect to deepen her own spiritual growth within Judaism. And she definitely hopes to be a cantor someday.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Lead Teacher Debra Fricano (she/her) was born and raised in Queens.  For anyone curious about NYC public high schools, Debra was in the first graduating class of the High School of American Studies at Lehman College.  Debra pursued a BA in Sociology from Brandeis University and an MA in Experiential Jewish Education from Davidson School at JTS.  Throughout the past 20 years Debra has worked in youth groups, synagogue supplemental schools, Hillels, and Jewish sleepaway camps as a Jewish educator and songleader. Most recently Debra built community at a Reconstructionist synagogue, and is committed to values based education that is accessible and welcoming to all families.  As of September 2024 Debra is studying at the Academy for Jewish Religion pursuing both rabbinic and cantorial ordination.  Debra brings a passion for educating through creative play, bibliodrama, and song writing, and is excited to return to Fig Tree this year!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Lead Teacher Aviva (she/her) is a Jewish educator, writer, and performer based in Queens. Aviva was raised in a tight-knit progressive traditional egalitarian Jewish community in Berkeley, California. Aviva has worked in Jewish education since 2018, teaching b’nei mitzvah, Hebrew school, adult education. Aviva loves teaching through her artistic practice, using theater, storytelling, and visual art as a means to teach Jewish traditions, stories, and language. S Aviva’s plays and writing have been featured at venues such as Under St. Marks Theater, the Bell House, and the San Francisco Contemporary Jewish Museum, as well as in print and online journals.       <image:caption>Lead Teacher Arielle (she/her) is an actress, writer and filmmaker. As an actor, she has performed at multiple theaters including Lincoln Center, George Street Playhouse, New Jersey Repertory Company, Ensemble Studio Theater, Pregones PRTT, The Tank, Long Wharf Theater, Chautauqua Theater Company, among others. For television, her acting work can be seen in series on HBO, Cinemax, Amazon and independent productions. As a filmmaker, Arielle’s work focuses on intergenerational women and the inherited stories that shape ourselves and our relationship to the world.  She received her BFA from The University of Michigan, her MFA from NYU Tisch Grad Acting and is a proud alum of The Colbert Report internship program. Arielle is excited to join the Fig Tree community, bringing a spirit of play and exploration to the long beautiful history of Jewish storytelling.</image:caption>

Aside from Israel and the USA, he also lived in Poland, Turkey, Australia, Angola and the United Kingdom.       <image:caption>Lead Teacher Ron (he/him) is a musician and educator who began working with Fig Tree in 2019. As a teacher, Ron has worked in Montessori, special needs, and multilingual Spanish and Hebrew environments for over a decade, in K-8th, after school, and summer camp programs throughout NYC. He has also had the joy of tutoring Fig Tree alumni for their B'nei Mitzvah, teaching Torah, Hebrew language skills, liturgy, and musicianship. As a musician, Ron composes and performs as a multi-instrumentalist and installation artist. He also teaches private and group lessons in piano, guitar, and electronic music. Ron completed his Bachelor's in linguistics and music composition at Oberlin College and Conservatory and holds a Master's in music composition from Wesleyan University. Supplementing his lifelong Jewish learning, Ron has also studied at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem. He is thrilled to return to Fig Tree in 2024.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Assistant Teacher Sammy Strent (he/him) is a composer, educator, and music director from Bethesda, Maryland. Since an early age, he has been very involved in his Jewish communities, and always seeks to find creative ways to bring music into Judaism. While he attended the University of Miami for his undergraduate degree in music and Spanish, he wrote and premiered an arrangement of “Shalom Rav” at the school’s Hillel. This past summer, Sammy worked at Adventure Theatre as a music director in Glen Echo, Maryland, where he directed three shows for children in elementary and middle school. Sammy is extremely passionate about music and Judaism, and believes that music plays an essential role in bringing people together. In 2012 she lived in Israel where she became fluent in Hebrew while studying at Mayanot, an executive learning program with a focus on developing community leadership skills. She began teaching Judaic Studies in multiple schools while obtaining her degree in English literature from Brooklyn College. She is now pursuing an additional degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Fine Arts. Upon graduating she plans to create a colorful and contemporary perspective on ancient tales for both children and adults in the form of biblical illustration and storytelling. Aviva feels blessed to be working at Fig Tree and cannot wait for story time.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>B’nai Mitzvah Director and Rabbinic Intern Ami Weintraub (he/him or they/them) is excited for another year at Fig Tree. He has worked as a Hebrew school educator for over ten years in the DC area and in Pittsburgh. Ami lived in Pittsburgh for eight years and moved to Brooklyn last year after a brief time living in Manhattan and studying at the Hadar Yeshiva last school year. In Pittsburgh, Ami was the founder of a queer Jewish community center called Ratzon: Center for Healing and Resistance. Ami is also the author of a recently published book called, “To the Ghosts Who are Still Living,” which examines Jewish ancestry in Eastern Europe. In addition to teaching and writing, Ami is pursuing rabbinic ordination through the Aleph Renewal ordination program. Ami is originally from Silver Spring, MD where he grew up attending a Reconstructionist synagogue, going to Jewish summer  camp and learning about his Jewish culture with his family.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Director, Curriculum Design &amp; Cultivation Sarah Chandler is a Brooklyn-based Jewish educator, ritualist, artist, activist, and poet. She previously served as the Director of Earth Based Spiritual Practice for Hazon’s Adamah Farm, where she was responsible for Food, Farm, and Forest Jewish Educational Programming. Through the Jewish Theological Seminary, Sarah earned an an M.A. in Jewish Education, an M.A. Hebrew Bible, and a certificate in Contemporary Israel Education. She also received a certificate in Non-Profit Management and Jewish Communal Leadership from Columbia University. She teaches, writes, and consults on issues related to Judaism, earth-based spiritual practice, the environment, mindfulness, food values, and farming. Locally, Sarah is well known for customized baby naming rituals, creative backyard Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies, and officiating weddings with Jewish components for couples of all heritages.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Director, B’Nai Mitzvah Program Rachel Figurasmith is and born and raised New Yorker. She has worked in education and non-profit spaces for over a decade and is passionate about increasing access to quality education for all young people. Rachel is a trained special educator and works as a disability rights activist in multiple spaces. Rachel currently works with Repair the World NYC as the Family Engagement Coordinator, designing meaningful service learning experiences for families of all ages. Outside of Repair the World and Fig Tree, Rachel is a visiting professor with Hebrew College and private disability inclusion/behavior management consultant. Rachel holds a BA from Hampshire College and a Masters in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. When work in all these exciting spaces isn’t keeping her busy, Rachel can be found chasing her three-year-old daughter and two dogs, or spending time with her husband.</image:caption>
